History of Incisa in Val D'Arno near Florence
The chief town developed, over the centuries, out of the village at the bottom of the valley, which stood at the foot of the old fortress. Etruscan remains have been found in the area outside the town. In the Middle Ages, observation points and look-outs were installed.
In 1224 Florence built a fortress in Incisa which is still known as “the castle”, where the village developed. In 1294, Incisa appears to have qualified as a municipality and to have a podestà. In the 14th century, it became part of the “Fighini et Ancisa” League and was involved in the fighting between the Guelfs and the Ghibellines.
On the administrative level, Florence granted rural statute to the population of the country area and introduced new jurisdictional measures. The Podestà of Incisa was born. In 1529, a new military faction, the troups of the Prince of Orange, raided the area. This was directed towards the Florentine Republic.
